PowerVR Deal Not Final...Yet
Microprocessor Report jumps the gun; 3Dfx shares recover from Friday's scare
------------------------------------------------------Black Belt or Dural? That's the question that Sega seemingly answered last week when Microprocessor Report, an industry trade journal announced that the next game console would use the PowerVR 3D chipset rather than 3Dfx. As a result, 3Dfx's stock shares took a dip, which wasn't too good for their initial public offering.
However, since then, Sega has categorically denied formally choosing the NEC's PowerVR chipset as the backbone of the company's next machine. 3Dfx's stock prices rose again this week.
Sega has not stated that it won't choose PowerVR, either, so the Black Belt/Dural may still use the chips. The company is not prepared to divulge the information to the press. As soon as it does, we'll have the report.
