Black Belt Loses Out?
Looks like Dural wins by default as American
hardware team resigns
The clandestine war between Sega of America and
Sega of Japan over Sega's next console may have
ended last week with the resignation of the
entire American Black Belt hardware team.
For the past few months, industry insiders have
reported the existence of two competing
systems, with both teams aiming to make their
product the final spec for the
all-but-announced next-generation game console.
The Japanese team was working on a PowerVR
system called Dural, while the American team
was pushing 3Dfx as its 3D chipset of choice,
using the codename Black Belt.
With the resignation of the American team, the
PowerVR platform seems to be unopposed, and
development should already be in progress.
Sega of America refused to comment.
