3Dfx Exploring Options
July 24, 1997
Following its announcement that Sega has terminated its contract for the Black Belt, 3Dfx has become introspective with regard to the issue.
Next Generation Online caught up with 3Dfx spokesperson, Chris Kramer, to ask a few questions regarding the company's earlier announcement. While unable to offer many specifics, Kramer indicated that the company is spending a lot of time looking over its now voided contract.
NGO: The release 3Dfx issued yesterday mentions the possibility of `legal recourse' for the cancellation of contract. What exactly does that mean for Sega and 3Dfx?
Kramer: At this point our lawyers are looking over the contracts and doing research. For now, we really don't know yet.
NGO: With Sega terminating the contract, would it be safe to presume that 3Dfx is now released the three year console exclusivity clause that was featured prominently in SEC documents and the contract itself?
Kramer: Good question. We think so, but again the lawyers are looking over the documents to find out these sorts of details for sure. All we really know, and are sure of is, yesterday Sega told us we wouldn't be doing the chip and that the decision was made not because of any performance or cost issues.
Next Generation Online will continue to follow the developments of this story over the coming days.
